Unless you completely hate tequila (and if you do, we can’t be friends) then you’ve probably at some point had a margarita. Margaritas remind us of warm weather, fun in the sun with friends, and tropical getaways. I mean, it’s practically a vacation in a glass!
A few years ago, when spiked seltzers were just becoming popular thanks to Bon & Viv, which was then really the ONLY spiked seltzer, I came upon a recipe on their website making a margarita using their lime spiked seltzer. My mind was blown. Seltzer in a margarita? I couldn’t resist experimenting.
Flash forward to 2020 and I’m still making this drink at home. Honestly, when I used to go out to dinner for some Mexican fare, I always found myself wishing they could make me a spiked seltzer margarita. It just was so light and refreshing, it was hard not to crave it.
Over the years I’ve experimented with different tequilas, using fresh lime juice versus bottled, using salt or not at all, I’ve even tried different seltzer flavors. It really doesn’t matter what lime spiked seltzer you choose to go with, it’s entirely up to your preference. I typically like the Bon & Viv spiked seltzer flavors more than others, with Truly becoming a close second. However this last time I used Bent Water Brewing key lime seltzer, new to the market, and it had a nice light lime flavor that was perfect for this concoction.
My final and favorite version is pretty simple. Reposado or Blanco tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice, a pinch of salt, and lime spiked seltzer. That’s it. Simple? Yes. Tasty? You better believe it!
Margarita Refresher
*2 oz Blanco or Reposado tequila
*2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
*Salt
*Lime spiked seltzer
*Salt or worm salt for rim if desired
*Lime wedge or circle for garnish
Combine tequila, lime juice, and a pinch of salt in a shaker. Fill to top of liquid with ice.
If you are going to do a rim on your glass, cut a lime wedge and run along the edge of the glass. Dip glass into salt or worm salt, then fill 3/4 of the way with ice.
Shake contents for about 10 seconds then strain into your glass.
Top off with lime spiked seltzer. Garnish with a lime wedge or float a circle of lime in your drink.
Drink in the sun, dreaming of a simple time and a white sand beach. (Jimmy Buffet playing in the background not required.)
Salud!
